The enduring mystery of what happened to the first English colony in the New World . . .

In 1587, a group of would-be colonists set sail from England and later landed on Roanoke Island, now part of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Their ship returned to England and the settlers were never heard from again. This is the story, based on legendary and historical information, of what might have happened to them.

Jocelyn White, a newlywed married to Thomas Coleman, is reluctant to leave her home in England for the wild shores of the New World. The journey is fraught with danger, but her dependence on God and God's providence carry her safely through.

I got this book because I know there are several theories about the missing colony of Roanoke, and because I like history. This book is interesting from a historical point of view, but just so depressing. Of course I knew there would not be a happy-ever-after for these colonists and that life would be hard, but it seemed like there was so little joy in life for them. The book is long, the author really fleshed out a story that had little eye witness account information about it, other than the first few months in the colony. At times I got tired with the length of the book and the sadness of the story, but kept reading it because I wanted to find out how the author would explain the missing colony. She made her theory very plausible, and left 3 survivors to continue on to the next book in the series. I gained some insight into the Puritan religious thoughts and how those beliefs affected nearly every aspect of their life in this new world. Angela Hunt is a great storyteller and writer, and I enjoyed some of her other books much more than this one. But really it is not her fault that the subject matter was so sad. She was bold to tackle this story!

While no one really knows anything about the fate of the colony at Roanoke, this author has a very good imagination and has undoubtedly taken great pains in researching the story as far as it can be researched. I felt like I was there; at the house when her father died; in the office when her uncle bartered her in marriage to a young man that had a strange outlook on life; in the hold of the during the voyage over the ocean from England to the New World, helping to tend to the sick; helping the struggling village as they attempted to build homes in a hostile environment; and finally watching as they sent their children to the refuge of the only boat to try to save them. This was an exceptional historical romance, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone to read.
The author created believable characters to go with real names of some of the people who colonized Roanoke, Virginia in the late 1500's. The novel starts out like a romantic, marriage-of-convenience story but things get progressively darker - the minister Thomas treats his young wife Jocelyn so badly that I began to wonder if their relationship could ever be redeemed. Towards the end of this lengthy novel, there's little hope that anything about the story can be redeemed as one main character after another meets a miserable end. There are various theories online about the disappearance of the little colony of Roanoke, and the author seems to have chosen the most sordid, depressing option. The storylines the author creates for the colonists are mostly disheartening, as well. To give the author credit, though, Angela Hunt researched her characters well, and most of the history checked out with a quick Google search, so I feel like I learned some things. This was a well-written book with well-developed characters, and it held my interest enough to finish it even after I realized that no one's story would turn out well. If happily-ever-after endings are not a priority for you, you might enjoy this history lesson dressed up in fiction.
I really wanted to like this book. I generally will lap up any kind of historical fiction (but rarely romance), but I wish I hadn't bought this book. The historical setting is interesting -- the "lost colony" of Roanoke -- but the writing is pretty amateur. The story centers on the main character, Jocelyn, and her relationship with Thomas Colman, a minister. But really, they could be two modern kids in middle school. On the ship's journey to America, there is a constant theme (as often occurs in middle schoolers) of "oh, I asked so-and-so, and he said he likes you" and such. If it weren't so childish, it might even be funny. The narrative is laden with too many adjectives (a really basic writing error) and the dialogue is stilted even for that time period. If I have to read one more time that the colonists didn't wear stiff Elizabethan collars, I'm going to throw the book across the room (oh, it's a book, so maybe I shouldn't!). And the lack of historical authenticity (as others have noted) really grates on the reader as well.

I'm disappointed, because given the time period and setting, it COULD have been so much better.
